Getting started

Install with Docker (NAS)

The Docker edition is the same Reelhost with the same screens, running in a container next to your Jellyfin container. You use it from a browser. It works with Jellyfin's official image (jellyfin/jellyfin) and with linuxserver.io's, on 64-bit Intel, AMD and ARM.

  1. Get a key. On reelhost.app, choose Get the Docker edition and enter your email. We send a free key and the two commands to start. Asking again sends the same key. Bought Reelhost? Your license key and its email work instead.
  2. Sign in to the registry on the computer that runs Docker: docker login registry.reelhost.app. Username: the email the key went to. Password: the key, which starts with RH-.
  3. Save compose.yml (it's on the download page) in a folder of its own, and change the media path in both services to where your movies and shows are. Already run Jellyfin? Point Reelhost's /jellyfin-config at the folder that is your Jellyfin container's /config, and leave the jellyfin service out.
  4. Start it: docker compose up -d.
  5. Open Reelhost at http://your-server:8099 on a phone or computer on your home network. The first visit asks you to set Reelhost's own password (at least 10 characters, not your Jellyfin password). Only a device on your home network can set it.
  6. Run the Check-up. On People & folders, connect Reelhost to Jellyfin once.

Free or paid. The free key downloads the image, and the check-up and previews are free, as on the desktop. To apply fixes, buy a plan and enter its key on the License screen. Activating it in Docker counts as one of the license's two computers, and it stays activated when you update or recreate the container.

What's different in Docker:

  • Firewall, Sleep settings and Network drives don't apply in a container, so they're hidden. The ports you publish decide who can reach Jellyfin, sleep is set on the computer that runs Docker, and Jellyfin sees the folders you mount into it.
  • Antenna TV is set up on the Antenna & recordings screen instead of in the Check-up.
  • Folders: type the path as Jellyfin's container sees it, such as /media/movies. Mount your media into Reelhost at the same path as in Jellyfin.
  • Video speed: give Jellyfin and Reelhost the same graphics device (/dev/dri for Intel or AMD, or the NVIDIA runtime).
  • Private watching: Reelhost can't install Tailscale from inside a container. Install it on the computer that runs Docker.
  • Updates: the Updates screen tells you when there's a new version. Run docker compose pull, then docker compose up -d. Your password, license, backups and web address are kept in Reelhost's data folder.

On a NAS:

  • Synology (Container Manager): sign in to the registry first, over SSH with sudo docker login registry.reelhost.app, then create a Project with the compose file. Use folders under /volume1/docker/. DSM uses ports 80 and 443 itself: for the web address, publish Reelhost's 443 on another port ("8443:443") and forward your router's port 443 to 8443.
  • Unraid: sign in from Unraid's terminal, then add Reelhost under Docker, Add Container, with repository registry.reelhost.app/reelhost:latest. Map /data to /mnt/user/appdata/reelhost, /jellyfin-config to Jellyfin's appdata folder, your media share at the same path as in Jellyfin, and port 8099. Set JELLYFIN_URL to http://<Unraid's address>:8096, and PUID 99 and PGID 100 like other Unraid apps. Unraid's own page uses 443 when SSL is on.
  • TrueNAS SCALE: install Jellyfin from the catalog, then Reelhost as a Custom App with image registry.reelhost.app/reelhost and tag latest. Mount a dataset at /data, Jellyfin's config dataset at /jellyfin-config, and your media at the same path as in Jellyfin. Set JELLYFIN_URL to http://<TrueNAS address>:<Jellyfin's port>. If the app can't download the image, sign in from TrueNAS's shell (sudo docker login registry.reelhost.app) and try again. TrueNAS's own page uses 443.

Port 8099 is Reelhost's own page: keep it on your home network and never forward it on your router. Stuck? See docker login says unauthorized and a port is in use.
