Getting started

Sync jobs

A sync job copies what's new and changed from a folder you choose to another one, by itself: back up your movies to a NAS or an external drive, bring new downloads into your library, or keep a second drive in step. Each job copies one way. The folder you copy from is only read, never changed.

  1. Open Sync jobs and click Add a sync job.
  2. Choose the folder to copy from, then where the copies go: a folder on this computer, an external drive, a mapped drive or a network share (in Docker, a folder mounted into Reelhost's container). One can't be inside the other.
  3. Choose Copy new and changed files (recommended) or Mirror.
  4. Choose when: Every night between two hours you pick, Every hour, or When the source changes. You can also leave out names or patterns, copy Only media, limit the speed on a network, or have Jellyfin look for new files afterwards.
  5. Click Preview to see what the first run will copy and whether there's room, then Save and run now or Save job.

Copy or Mirror. Copy never deletes anything in the destination. Mirror also moves destination files that aren't in the source any more, your own files there too, so you tick a box to confirm it. Nothing is deleted outright: in both modes, a replaced or moved file goes to .reelhost-recovery inside the destination for 30 days. An empty source moves nothing, and before Mirror moves more than half the destination, a scheduled run stops and Run now asks you to tick a box.

When jobs run. On Windows and Mac, Reelhost's hourly background task runs what's due, with the app closed too; When the source changes looks every 15 minutes. In Docker, Reelhost's server looks every 15 minutes. Runs wait while someone's watching and carry on later, unless you untick Never while someone's watching.

  • Run now runs a job straight away with its progress. Pause holds it until you click Run now (carry on); Cancel stops this run.
  • Preview shows what a run would do, copying nothing. Turn off stops it running by itself; Remove deletes it, and the copied files and its recovery folder stay.
  • Last runs shows each run and its Log. A file still downloading or open in another program is skipped and tried at the next run.
  • A run that didn't finish (a NAS switched off, a full drive) says why on the job, and emails you when alerts are on. On Windows the background task can't sign in to a NAS that asks for a password; Run now still works.

Previews are free. Saving and running sync jobs needs Complete or Yearly.
