Getting started

Using Reelhost with Emby

Reelhost looks after Emby as well as Jellyfin. When Emby is the only server on the computer, the check-up is about Emby, and its header says so (for example Emby 4.8.10 on port 8096). When both are there, buttons at the top of the check-up choose which one it's about; it starts with Jellyfin.

What Reelhost fixes for Emby. Each one is shown in the review before anything changes, backed up first, and can be undone on its own by unticking it:

  • Firewall (Windows): a rule named Reelfix - Emby web that lets phones and TVs at home reach Emby's port.
  • Sleep settings: keeps the computer awake when plugged in, as for Jellyfin.
  • Watching away from home: your web address or Tailscale goes to Emby's port, with the same certificate and address as for Jellyfin. Reelhost turns on Emby's Allow remote connections if it's off and sets the limit for streams away from home. Emby restarts once.

What Reelhost explains but leaves to Emby. Emby's web port, its network search (Emby has no switch to turn it off), its TV media list (DLNA), network drives when Emby runs as a Windows service (use the network path, like \\nas\movies, in Emby's library settings), and video speed. When Jellyfin shares the computer, the clashes are fixed on Jellyfin's side: choose Jellyfin at the top of the check-up.

Emby Premiere. Emby needs Emby Premiere for hardware video speed (converting video on the graphics card). Reelhost never turns it on for you. To let Reelhost check whether your server has Premiere, add an Emby API key under the Video speed check (in Emby: Settings, then Advanced, then API Keys or Security). The key stays on this computer and is only sent to Emby. Jellyfin does hardware video speed free.

Jellyfin only. People & folders, Switch from Plex, Viewing, Subtitles, Themes, Watch together, Free TV, Antenna & recordings and Monitor work through Jellyfin. While the check-up is about Emby they stay in the menu, marked Jellyfin, and show a short note instead of running. Don't show again hides the note for that screen. To try them, see Moving from Emby to Jellyfin.

Docker. Set EMBY_URL (for example http://emby:8096) and mount Emby's /config into Reelhost's container at /emby-config, read-write. EMBY_API_KEY lets Reelhost restart Emby after a change and check Premiere; without it, restart the Emby container yourself. EMBY_PUBLIC_PORT is the port Emby is published on (8096 by default).

On a Mac, Reelhost quits Emby Server while it changes Emby's settings for watching away from home, then opens it again. The macOS firewall check explains what to allow; Reelhost doesn't change the macOS firewall for Emby.
