Moving from Emby to Jellyfin
Jellyfin is free and open source, and it started from the same code as Emby, so it reads your library the same way. You don't have to choose straight away: both can run on the same computer while you try it.
- Try it side by side. Set up Jellyfin for me (in the menu, or Try it with Jellyfin on a Jellyfin-only screen) installs Jellyfin from jellyfin.org. Emby keeps port 8096; Jellyfin gets the next free port, such as 8097. Emby isn't changed. The check-up then has a button for each server.
- What carries over. Point Jellyfin at the same media folders. It reads the
.nfofiles and artwork Emby saved next to your videos (when Emby was set to save them there), so titles, posters and descriptions come back quickly. - What you set up again. People and their passwords, watch history and resume points, playlists, Live TV and any Emby plugins. Reelhost doesn't copy these from Emby. People & folders makes adding people and libraries quick.
- While both run, the check-up's four Emby checks stop them clashing: apps finding the wrong server, both in the TV's media list, and each overwriting the other's artwork. They change Jellyfin's side only.
- When you're ready, uninstall Emby the usual way. Jellyfin keeps its port; give your apps its address from Connect devices.
