Getting started

Cloud backup

Every night, cloud backup saves a small encrypted copy of Jellyfin's settings, the people who watch, what each of them watched and where they stopped, favourites and ratings, playlists and collections, and Reelhost's own choices. It goes in a folder you choose: one OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive or iCloud Drive syncs, another drive, or your NAS. If this computer's drive dies, you restore it all on a new one. Nothing goes to Reelhost's servers, and your cloud service can't read it. Your media, artwork and passwords aren't in it.

  1. Open Backups. Under Cloud backup, pick a folder Reelhost found, or Choose another folder….
  2. Click Make my recovery code and save it somewhere safe, like a password manager or on paper. It's shown only once, and without it nobody can open your backups, Reelhost included. Tick I've saved my recovery code. Have one from another computer? Choose I already have one.
  3. Click Turn on cloud backup. The first backup is made straight away.
  • Reelhost's hourly background task (in Docker, Reelhost's server) makes one between 1 and 6 am, or as soon as it can after a missed night. They go in a Reelhost backups folder inside yours.
  • It keeps this computer's newest backup of each of the last 7 days and the last 4 weeks, and never touches other files there.
  • Back up now makes one at once. Change folder moves it. Turn off stops it; backups already made stay.
  • In Docker, mount the folder as /backups in Reelhost's part of your compose file, then run docker compose up -d.

Restoring

  1. Click Restore… next to a backup. On a new computer, once your cloud folder has synced, click Restore from another folder… and choose its Reelhost backups folder. Moving to a new computer offers it too.
  2. Enter the recovery code if asked, and click Preview restore. Each part says what it would change.
  3. Tick what you want: Jellyfin's settings, People who aren't here yet, What everyone watched, Playlists and collections, Reelhost's own records. Then click Restore ….

Restoring only adds or brings back; nothing is marked unwatched. Jellyfin's settings get a local backup first, then Jellyfin restarts. Each person added gets a new password, shown once for you to pass on. You can run it again once Jellyfin has finished scanning your library.

Turning cloud backup on, backing up and restoring need Complete or Yearly. Previewing a restore and turning it off are free.
