AI subtitles

Under Make subtitles with AI on the Watching → Subtitles screen, Reelhost runs Whisper (whisper.cpp) on your own computer to write subtitles for videos that have none in your language.

  1. Check this PC (or Mac): free, and changes nothing. It suggests a quality: Best with an NVIDIA card, less on slower computers. AMD and Intel graphics can't help on Windows; in Docker and on an Intel Mac the processor does the work.
  2. Download and test: the model is 78 MB (Fastest), 148 MB (Good), 488 MB (Better) or 1.5 GB (Best), downloaded once with the fastest model and an English live one. On Windows and in Docker whisper.cpp is downloaded too; the Mac app has it built in. The test times 30 seconds of one of your videos and says how long a movie takes, such as About 1–2 hours per movie. If a movie would take over 6 hours, it suggests a faster quality.
  3. Turn on AI subtitles: tick the movie and TV libraries, choose Your language, and if you like, Translate foreign-language films into English subtitles.

Skipped: videos that already have subtitles in your language, in the file or next to it (signs-only tracks don't count), or in their own audio language. Trailers and extras are never done.

When it runs, and why it's waiting

By default (When the computer is quiet) it works only while the computer is idle: nobody has used the keyboard or mouse for the minutes set in Start after nobody has used this PC for (10 by default), and nobody is watching anything on Jellyfin. In Docker only playback counts. Until then the queue says Waiting until nobody has used the computer for 4 more minutes or Waiting: Maya on Living room TV is watching. When someone comes back, the video stops within seconds and waits again. Whisper runs at the lowest priority, so it never slows anyone down. After you turn it on it starts within 15 minutes; on Windows it runs while you're signed in.

On a server that's never quiet, choose Anytime, at low priority, or press Start now: see When AI subtitles are made, and Start now.

When someone plays a video with no subtitles in their language, it jumps the queue and starts at once, from where they are, with the fastest model. If playback could stutter (a slow conversion, or the processor 90% busy) it shows Paused so playback doesn't stutter and tries again shortly.

The queue and the files

  • One video at a time, most likely to be watched next first. Up next shows the next five and why. Pause and Resume at any time.
  • A video that fails three times shows Didn't work; Try the failed ones again retries it.
  • Each file is saved next to its video as Movie (2001).en.English - AI.srt, never over an existing file. Under Made by AI, Delete removes one, and that video isn't made again. See Subtitle files.

Plan: checking the computer, pausing, turning off and deleting are free. Downloading a model and turning AI subtitles on need Complete or Yearly.
