Photos in Signal: private until you share them

Signal shows the photos in your Jellyfin photo libraries (Home videos and photos, and the Photos library Reelhost makes). Reelhost decides what each person and each TV may see, whatever the app shows, and keeps those choices itself, not in Jellyfin.

  • Private until shared. A photo reaches TVs and other people only when its owner chooses Show on TV and other devices for it, its album or folder, or the whole library. The closest choice wins, so one photo can stay private inside a shared album.
  • Who owns them. The server's admins own a library's photos, unless an admin names its owners in Signal (a library that's one person's own). Owners see all of them on their phones and make the choices.
  • Hidden. Anyone can hide a photo or album of theirs on their phone. No one else sees it, no TV shows it, and only they can unhide it. Reelhost never shows what's hidden, here or in the Activity list.
  • Someone without access to a library in Jellyfin gets nothing from it through Signal either.

Edited copies

Signal's editor never changes your photo. Save a copy writes a new file next to the original in the same folder, named Beach (edited).jpg (or Beach (edited 2).jpg when that name is taken), never over an existing file, and Jellyfin picks it up within a moment. Admins and people who can open that library may save copies; each one is in the Activity list. They're listed under Connect devices → Photos in Signal, and when you remove Reelhost you choose whether they stay (only copies still exactly as saved can be deleted, never an original).

TV screensaver

A TV's screensaver shows only photos that are shown on TVs, never hidden ones. An admin sets the household's choice in Signal: which albums or folders (or everything shared), favourites only, shuffle, seconds per photo, the clock and the slow pan-and-zoom. Each person can pick their own instead, or go back to the household's.
