Sign in a TV by scanning a QR code
In development. This is built and tested in pieces, but not yet tried on every TV and phone. Until then the 6-digit code on the TV keeps working as in Sign in a TV with a Quick Connect code.
- On the TV, open Signal and choose your server. It shows Scan with your phone, a QR code and a short code.
- Point your phone's camera at the QR code and open the link.
- With the Signal app on the phone, it opens there and asks Sign in Living room TV as David? Check that the code on the phone matches the TV, then choose Approve. The TV signs in as that person.
- Without the app, the link opens a page in the phone's browser. Choose Sign in here instead. That page is on your own server: tap your picture or type your name and password, then approve the TV. Your password goes from the phone to your own server only. Reelhost's website never sees it and nothing keeps it.
The QR code holds no password. It works once and runs out after about five minutes, and the TV makes a new one on its own. Nothing is signed in until you approve. If the TV isn't yours, or you didn't just start signing in, choose Decline or close the page.
Away from home. The page on your own server only opens on your home Wi-Fi, unless you have set up a web address. On mobile data, use the Signal app, or choose Sign in with Reelhost on the TV: scan its code, sign in to your Reelhost account on the phone, and approve it. If the phone already has the Reelhost account in Signal, that is one tap.
The TV shows up in Jellyfin's list of devices with its own name. Sign it out there when you no longer want it signed in.
