Reactions and files in Family messages

Rolling out. The server side is in this version of Reelhost. The buttons for it in Signal arrive in a Signal update. An older Reelhost shows a plain line in Signal saying it needs updating.

Family messages are the chats in Signal's Family tab. The words of a message are locked on the phones before they reach your server, so Reelhost can't read them. Two things now go beside a message, and both stay on your own server.

  • Reactions. Press and hold a message to pick a reaction: a thumbs up, heart, laugh, surprise, sad face or thanks, or More emoji. Reactions show under the message with a count; yours is highlighted, and tapping it takes it off. Press and hold a reaction to see who gave it. Each person gives one of each emoji, a message holds up to 12 different ones, and everyone in the chat sees a new reaction at once. Kids profiles pick from a shorter list. The server keeps only which emoji, on which message, from whom, and the people in the chat are the only ones who can ask for it. Unlike the words of a message, the server can see a reaction.
  • Files. The paperclip beside the message box adds photos, videos, documents or a photo from the camera. A file doesn't live inside the message: it goes through Send files to the people in the chat, encrypted on your server, with an end date (7 days, or 1 to 30). The message shows a small card with the name, size and end date. The others tap Download (or Save to Photos for a picture or video on a phone) to save it on their own device. After the end date the card says File expired and the copy is deleted. Reelhost never stores the file; the card holds no more than the name, size, end date and, for a picture, a preview of a few kilobytes.
  • Who can send. The same rules as Send files: a kids profile can pick files up but sends only when an admin allows it, programs are refused, and size and room are the limits set at home. Everyone you send to must have opened Send files once.
  • Files in Family. The Files button at the top of Family opens Send files: send a file, pick up what's waiting for you, see what you sent.

Reactions and files are part of the family tools, so they come with the same Reelhost plan as the family calendar and shared lists. When you remove Reelhost, the reactions and cards are deleted with the lists they belong to.
