Watching away from home

Set up private watching (Tailscale)

The private alternative: for extra privacy, or when your internet provider doesn't allow incoming connections (carrier-grade NAT).

  1. Choose Just my devices, then Install Tailscale.
  2. Sign in to Tailscale. Your browser opens: use Google, Microsoft or Apple, and the same account on every device you'll watch on.
  3. Turn on remote watching. This needs Complete or Yearly.
  4. Optional: Add secure address gives Jellyfin an https:// name inside Tailscale. Turn on HTTPS once in Tailscale's DNS settings first (Open Tailscale DNS settings).
  5. On each phone, tablet or TV, install Tailscale and the Jellyfin app, sign in to Tailscale with the same account, then connect.

If Tailscale won't install from Reelhost, install it from tailscale.com/download, then come back.

On a Mac, Reelhost doesn't install Tailscale: Get Tailscale for Mac opens tailscale.com/download/mac. Install it, open it once, then check again. In Docker, install Tailscale on the computer that runs Docker (or as its own container), sign in, and use Jellyfin's address on your tailnet with the port Jellyfin is published on.
