Watching away from home

When your provider shares one address (carrier-grade NAT)

Some internet providers share one public IPv4 address among many homes. It's common with 5G home internet and satellite plans. Visits from the internet then can't reach your computer over IPv4, whatever you set on your router.

Reelhost spots it before opening anything: your router's internet address is a private one or starts with 100.64 to 100.127, or the internet sees your home at a different address than your router reports.

  • With a public IPv6 address, setup carries on over IPv6 only. See IPv6.
  • Without one, Reelhost explains what it found, and nothing is claimed or opened.

A Reelhost relay for connections like this is planned. Until then:

  • Some providers give a home its own public IPv4 address if you ask. After that, set up the address again.
  • If this computer uses a VPN, the internet sees the VPN's address instead of your home's. Turn it off and try again.
  • The private option ("Just my devices") works today for devices you control.
