Plex Pass vs Jellyfin: what each really costs over 1, 3 and 5 years
Updated ยท 5 min read
Plex Pass vs Jellyfin looks like a simple sum: one costs money and the other is free. It isn't quite that simple. Here are the real totals over one, three and five years, including the costs people leave out on both sides.
What you pay for on each side
Plex is free to use at home. You pay for extras. Plex Pass is $6.99 a month, $69.99 a year, $249.99 for five years, or $749.99 for a lifetime pass; on July 1, 2026 the lifetime price went up from $249.99 and the five-year pass was added. Plex Pass includes watching your server away from home, hardware-accelerated streaming and more. If remote watching is all you want, the Remote Watch Pass covers just that, for $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year.
Jellyfin is free and open source, with no paid tier. Hardware transcoding, live TV and its apps cost nothing. What Jellyfin doesn't do for you is watching away from home. You can set that up free with Tailscale, a private network between your own devices. If you want a public web address that works on any device, you typically buy a domain name, which runs about $10 to $15 a year, and set up HTTPS yourself.
The third cost is your time. Plex sets itself up. Jellyfin takes an evening or so the first time: libraries, users, apps, and the remote access part. After that, expect some upkeep when a certificate, an update or your home's internet address changes.

Each row is the total paid by the end of that year, in US dollars.

Reading the table
Plex Pass yearly vs lifetime. At $749.99, the lifetime pass costs as much as almost eleven years of the yearly plan. Before July 2026 it paid for itself in under four. If you're new to Plex now and expect to stay a few years, the five-year pass ($249.99) costs less than five yearly plans ($349.95); lifetime only pays off after about ten years.
Remote Watch Pass. If remote watching is the only thing you'd pay Plex for, this is Plex's cheapest route: $149.95 over five years. You don't get the other Plex Pass features, such as hardware-accelerated streaming.
Jellyfin alone. The money side really is zero with Tailscale, as long as everyone who watches away from home can install it on their device. A public address adds a domain name each year, and the time to set up and keep up HTTPS. Jellyfin remote access, step by step shows both routes, and the HTTPS certificate guide covers the certificate itself.
Jellyfin with Reelhost. Core fixes setup problems, but it doesn't include watching away from home; pair it with Tailscale set up by hand. Complete includes remote watching with a yourname.watchhome.app address, so there's no domain to buy. Reelhost AI is included with Complete for 12 months, then $9.99 a year if you want to keep it; the table leaves that optional cost out. Paid once at $99.99, Complete costs less than two years of Plex Pass.
The honest answer for many people: if Plex already works for your family and you value its polished apps and free channels, the yearly Plex Pass is fair value. If you mostly play your own files and don't want a recurring bill, Jellyfin costs less from year one. A Plex alternative without a subscription compares the other choices, Emby and Kodi included.
Costs that don't change
Both servers run on the same kind of hardware: an old PC, a Mac mini, or a NAS. Your disks, the computer and the electricity to keep it on cost the same whichever server you pick, so they're left out above. One difference worth knowing: Jellyfin's hardware transcoding is free, while Plex needs Plex Pass for it. On a low-powered machine, that can decide whether a stream plays smoothly.
Questions
Is Plex Pass lifetime worth it in 2026?
At $749.99, it costs as much as almost eleven years of the $69.99 yearly plan. It's worth it only if you're sure you'll use Plex for longer than that.
Does Jellyfin cost anything at all?
Not for the software. The server and its apps are free and open source. The costs are optional: a domain name if you want a public address, and your time to set things up.
Do I need Plex Pass to watch away from home?
Plex sells two options: Plex Pass, or the Remote Watch Pass at $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year, which covers remote watching only.
The one-click way: Reelhost
Reelhost takes the time cost out of Jellyfin. The free check-up finds what's wrong; Core, $49.99 once, applies the fixes with a backup for each. Complete, $79.99 once at launch, then $99.99, or Yearly at $29.99 a year, adds watching away from home, private with Tailscale or at your own yourname.watchhome.app address, plus Switch from Plex.
The check-up is free and changes nothing. Every fix is previewed, backed up and reversible.
